When I first became a Team Lead, I felt I needed to prove to my manager that they’d made the right choice. And that my every move was being scrutinised.
Since then, I have spent more than 25 years in leadership roles at organisations such as Arthur Andersen (now Deloitte), Credit Suisse, McDermott Will & Emery and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Most recently recruiting, coaching and coordinating the team coaches for 13 newly formed Agile squads in a major charity. Many of the coaches and team leads had no prior coaching or leadership experience. My efforts won a nomination for Employee of the Year.
For me, it’s always been about the people – and that’s why I set up my own independent coaching practice in 2012. I’ve seen time and again that newly promoted leads and managers (me included) have a drop in performance after promotion.
